Is Astaire Castle Haunted or Cursed?

So entertaining! The entire series is so much fun. Since Mac’s birth mother died and left him her huge estate, the former police detective has been living in Spencer Manor in Deep Creek Lake. Assisting the police chief and half-brother, David, he is involved in a variety of investigations, usually including murder. This time we discover…

  • A long-abandoned castle that Mac Faraday owns, kept secret by everyone else because of terrible deaths that occurred there in the past.
  • A young man, more than a decade ago, missing and presumed dead.
  • Gnarly falls in love.
  • David is reunited with an old love.
  • A mysterious white wolf, sometimes more as a mist than a shape.
  • David gets shot.
  • Strangers arriving in town suddenly, all with their own secret and not-so-secret goals.

The story may take place in the present day, but Ms. Carr takes us back, a dozen years, a few years, to explore the histories of her very unusual characters. This one might even include a bit of the supernatural.

As always, the author, Lauren Carr, provides a plethora of suspects to go along with a number of bodies. It’s a delight to follow along, trying to figure out which could be the guilty party or who might be next to die. With German shepherd and former military dog, Gnarly, along you know you will be inspired (when you are not laughing at his very unmilitary-ish antics).

Review by Merry Citarella Jaquo Magazine

"I love how seamlessly Carr is able to tie nearly everything together in the end, save the supernatural entities she evokes in this thriller, and as a paranormal and mystery lover, this novel is the perfect mix, providing enough evidence to explain away multiple happenings while leaving enough room for speculation for those a little more into the supernatural."

"The Murders at Astaire Castle is a page-turner that resounds with Halloween season chills and thrills, along with plot twists as jagged as the shoreline of Deep Creek Lake."

Never tell Mac Faraday not to go someplace.

Spencer’s police chief, David O’Callaghan, learns this lesson the hard way when he orders Mac to not go to the south end of Spencer’s mountaintop —even though he owns the property. It doesn’t take long for Mac to find out what lies on the other side of a stone wall and locked gate with a warning for visitors to keep out.

Topping the list of the ten top haunted places in America, Astaire Castle is associated with two suicides, three mysterious disappearances, and four murders since it was built almost a century ago—and Mac Faraday owns it!

In spite of David’s warning to keep out, Mac can’t resist unlocking the gate to see the castle that supposedly hasn’t seen a living soul since his late mother had ordered it closed up after the double homicide and disappearance of Damian Wagner, a world-famous master of horror novels.

What was supposed to be a quick tour of a dusty old castle turns into another Mac Faraday adventure when Astaire Castle becomes the scene of even more murders. Mac is going to need to put all of his investigative talents to work to sort out this case that involves the strangest characters he has run into yet—including a wolfman. No, we’re not talking about Gnarly.
